For High School Seniors
- Filter The Noise
- Put aside peer voices, opinions, College Ratings for the moment
- See the Place
- Can you see professors who care/might excite you about learning/serve as a mentor, where extra-curricular opportunities interested you?
- Brave the Truth
- Speak up to parents/friends: don’t let everyone else’s expectations silence you
For Their Parents
- Free Them Up
- Remove your feelings so they can tell you what they think. Key to remember: It’s not your experience, it’s theirs . . . The information you get will help.
- Suggest, Don’t “State”
- Asking questions in earnest, making suggestions for things they’ve missed e.g. “What did you think about that Professor’s presentation?” “Can you see yourself living there?”
- Bar “Status:” Bring “Success”
- The college ratings don’t account for “fit” or future success.
- Reference Gallup Big 6 “Thriving” research: Seek evidence of students having jobs/internships where they applied what they were learning.
- Seek out information on possibilities of students working on long term projects or opportunities to be extremely involved in extra-curricular activities
This is an exciting time for the student and the family. Focusing on these topics will help create a “better” future filled with success and happiness!
