Effective Communication –

Homer Simpson teaches us, in his characteristic “D’OH” everything we need to remember about effectively communicating our wants, needs, beliefs, values, feelings and opinions. That’s right D’OH. The next time you find yourself in a situation where you feel like you should positively assert yourself; remember D’OH!

Remember this

Direct
Open
Honest

Direct is saying it it’s simplest terms – briefly and with emphasis. Not couched or covered up or drenched with false praise.

Open is acknowledging that once you give feedback, you may get some – being open means you’re willing to engage in a dialogue and accept any responsibility that’s yours. Similarly your body language and body posture reflects openness as well.

Honest is telling the truth – admitting how you really feel or what you really did so that the other person can attempt to completelyunderstand you. Honesty is owning your part of the responsibility of whatever happens.

The next time you’re in a “D’OH” situation say it to yourself and remember, DIRECT, OPEN and HONEST! Effective communication! You’ll be glad you did – and you’ll not only find yourself feeling more motivated to communicate honestly, you’ll find yourself getting more of what you want out of your life.

Thanks, HOMER!!!!
